The distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud based on double-mode RR Lyrae stars
نویسنده
چکیده
We use double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) stars from the macho variable star database of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to estimate its distance, by utilizing photometric data, linear pulsation and stellar atmosphere models. If we set EB−V = 0.11 and [M/H]= −1.5 for LMC, we get M − m = 18.52 mag, which is in agreement with the value obtained from Galactic cluster RRd stars. Although the formal statistical error (standard deviation) of M − m derived from the macho set is only 0.024 mag, the systematic errors are more substantial. These errors are mostly due to the zero point ambiguity of the temperature scale and to the error of the photometric calibration. However, the fact that the distance moduli obtained in this and in our former studies of cluster RRd and Small Magellanic Cloud beat Cepheids agree so well, implies that the only serious source of error is the zero point of the temperature scale, which should not have larger than ±0.10 mag effect on the distance modulus.

The distance modulus of the Small Magellanic Cloud based on double-mode Cepheids
We employ the very recent photometric data of the ogle project together with stellar atmosphere and linear pulsation models to determine the distance modulus of the Small Magellanic Cloud from its double-mode Cepheids. Based on the requirement of obtaining the same distance modulus DM from the two types of variables (fundamental & first overtone and first & second overtone), we get DM = 19.05 m...

The MACHO Project has catalogued ∼ 8000 RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, ∼ 1800 in the Galactic bulge, and ∼ 50 in the Sgr dwarf galaxy. These variables are excellent distance indicators, and are used as tools to study the structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the bulge. The large datasets also probe uncommon pulsation modes. A number of double-mode RR Lyrae stars (RRd) are f...

متن کاملThe distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud: Constraints from RR Lyrae pulsation properties
It has recently been suggested that the discrepancy between the “long” and “short” distance moduli of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), as inferred from the properties of the Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables, respectively, might be due to the action of “third parameters” between the Galaxy and the LMC, which would make the RR Lyraes in the old LMC globular clusters brighter than their Galactic co...
متن کاملHarmonizing the RR Lyrae and Clump Distance Scales — Stretching the Short Distance Scale to Intermediate Ranges?
I explore the consequences of making the RR Lyrae and clump giant distance scales consistent in the solar neighborhood, Galactic bulge and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). I employ two major assumptions: 1) that the absolute magnitude metallicity, MV (RR) – [Fe/H], relation for RR Lyrae stars is universal, and 2) that absolute I-magnitudes of clump giants, MI(RC), in Baade’s Window can be inferred...
